The Encouragement Our Kids Need

A word of encouragement offered in the right moment can be the difference between finishing well, and falling short because of exhaustion. Be in tune with other’s needs for encouragement, and offer supporting words or actions. #DailyMight

If the last year has taught us anything, it’s how to leverage our circles for good and put out as much encouragement to those we influence as we can. Now, more than ever, our kids are being exposed to new anxieties, risks, and other enemies that attempt to tear them down. It’s time for us to stand up, together.

Be the encouragement our kids need.

More than 15 years ago, I started on a journey to impact and mentor kids in a positive way through sports. Over the years I’ve begun to understand the importance of the qualities and traits that are built, brought out, and developed in our children through participation in youth sports. By mentoring youth athletes and guiding them through a season, I’ve learned that one of the most valuable lessons we can teach them is how to get through the season. Navigating the ups and down of a season is a replica of seasons they’ll encounter in life outside of sports as adults. The last 365 days has taught me the vital role encouragement plays is finishing a season.

This is the beginning of something great.

I’ve seen it brewing for a couple years now and I feel we are on the cusps of something great. I’ve seen youth coaching transition from transactional (all about the coach) to transformational (all about the athlete) and players are leaving the year more satisfied – and with better skill development. They are wanting to come back because they are learning to build each other up and pointing out qualities they appreciate in their teammates.

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

1 Thessalonians 5:11

We aren’t finished yet though. As the bible details in 1 Thessalonians, we are to build each other up, just like we are doing. A word of encouragement offered in the right moment can be the difference between finishing well, and falling short because of exhaustion. I encourage you to look around you. Look for the moment, be in tune with other’s needs for encouragement, and offer supporting words or actions. Thank you for the role you play in your young athlete’s life and the success in their sport.

Give everything your everything. And then some.
