Leaning Into Being Positive

The energy you bring to the table as an athlete is contagious. Every day you have the opportunity to positively or negatively affect those around you in the situations you encounter. But only one brings out the best work in all of us. #DailyMight

As a coach, there are a few traits that always stand out after getting to know an athlete. Once you get past raw talent and growth potential, a player’s attitude is the next most influential indicator for success. And the traits that make up that attitude, specifically positivity, can make or break reactions to adversity and capitalizing on growth opportunities. The energy that an athlete brings to the table is contagious.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

If the energy that is brought to the table by athletes is contagious, then it’s integral that we understand the cause and effects positive and negative energy have when it is presented in a team atmosphere. Both impact the team, both take a conceited effort to perform, but only one brings out the best in the athlete and their teammates.

Leaning into Positivity

As a member of a team, someone is always watching. They are taking into consideration the way that you act and respond to situations. When you lean into positivity within a team setting regarding all situations, you inherently increase the success by willing successful outcomes into existence. Positivity then becomes a competitive advantage because it instills confidence and offers encouragement for the tasks at hand.

Negating Negativity

Are you the one in the locker room, field, court or rink that specifically negates negativity within the team? If you’re not, you should be. Holding your teammates accountable to eliminate negativity is an elite leadership quality. By focusing on the positives – or what you want to see – and not on the negatives, you are not only negating negativity, but you are eliminating it all together.

Look, focusing on positivity doesn’t mean your head is in the sand. Focusing on positivity doesn’t mean that you are naïve to accountability and integrity. What it means is that you are a champion with what you’d like to see, and we all want to see positivity. Celebrate, not suppress. We all have the ability to bring positive or negative energy to the rink, field, and court. Both effect our ability to grow and succeed. But only one exponentially increases your chances of succeeding. Choose positivity.

Give everything your everything. And then some.
