Why I Stopped What I Was Doing to Pray

I was out and about last night hurrying from one task to another and needed to eat. Being in a hurry wasn’t unordinary. But the encounter when I stopped into Subway to grab a sandwich was.

Leaders, pray for your people. Pray for other managers of staff, their significant others, the workers & administrators. Pray for leaders at other places of work. Pray for your own spouses & your children who you sacrifice time spent with. Cover them ALL in prayer, in addition to yourself. #DailyMight

I was out and about last night hurrying from one task to another and needed to eat. Being in a hurry wasn’t unordinary. But the encounter when I stopped into Subway to grab a sandwich was. An athlete I coach baseball to was working. We are in the off season now, and a majority of the athletes spend this time playing another sport or training on their own. He went to work instead. I took the opportunity in line to reconnect. I learned he received a raise after 30 days. And again after 60 days. 90 days deserved another.

I asked him, like all coaches would, “why do you think you received a raise after such a short amount of time on the job?” He smiled a little and let me know he asked his boss that same question.

“And, what was his response?” I asked.

He said “I’m a reliable worker, I’m a strong teammate, and I have empathy and care for those around me.” I felt proud for this young man. I could see by his body language he was too.

I paid for my sandwich, and let him know that I wasn’t surprised one bit of his accomplishments on the job. “Those are all the traits you show as a baseball player.” I said thank you and as I was leaving I’ll never forget what he said.

“Coach, thanks for coaching those traits into me. I learned them from you.”

And that, is how you make a 40 year old man, in the middle of Subway, take a moment to pray for the youth of our community who get to experience youth sports. I also prayed for that leader at Subway who was pouring onto that young man.

Even when you don’t think they are watching, they always are feeling.

Give everything your everything. And then some.
